My private studio is on West Tompkins Avenue in Spring Valley, a short drive from Rhodes Ranch, Mountain’s Edge, Southern Highlands and the neighborhoods along the 215 in Enterprise. I am Dr. Maria “Masha” Pisarenko, a concert pianist and university piano professor, and I teach children from age three, teens, adults and seniors.
For families in the 89113, 89117, 89118, 89139, 89141, 89147, 89148, 89178 and 89179 ZIP codes the studio is close to home — lessons with a Doctor of Musical Arts without crossing the whole valley.

Close is not the same as right
In the southwest the problem is not distance. There are plenty of people within fifteen minutes of your house who will teach your child the piano, and that is exactly what makes the decision hard: everything looks equally convenient, so families choose by whoever answered first and find out two years later what they chose.
What you are really choosing is the ceiling. A teacher’s own level sets the point at which a student stops being taught and starts being supervised. If a child is talented, that ceiling arrives early, and the lessons quietly turn into practice sessions with an audience. I teach piano at the college level and prepare students for exams and competitions, so the ceiling in this studio is somewhere a beginner will not reach — which is the whole point of starting with someone who has one.
Convenience still matters, and here you keep it. The studio is on your side of the valley, the hours run to 9 pm by appointment, and if a week goes sideways we can move a lesson online instead of losing it.
The whole southwest: Enterprise, Mountain's Edge, Southern Highlands, Silverado Ranch
From the southwest the studio is a short drive north. The studio is open to families from Enterprise, Mountain's Edge, Southern Highlands, Silverado Ranch, Rhodes Ranch and Spanish Trail, from the newer neighborhoods along Cactus Avenue, Blue Diamond Road and Durango Drive, and from Blue Diamond. Families in Mountain's Edge can come straight up Durango or Buffalo; families in Southern Highlands and Silverado Ranch take the 215 west. Lessons are for every age, from three-year-olds to teens and adults, and a mom or dad can start lessons alongside a son or daughter.

Four questions worth asking before you book anyone
Ask them of me and of every other teacher on your shortlist. In a neighborhood where all the options are a ten-minute drive apart, these four are what actually separate them.
Where did you study, and with whom?
Mine is above and all of it is checkable. A teacher who is happy to name the institution and the teachers behind them is telling you there is a tradition in the room, not just a method book.
How far can you take my child?
Ask for the ceiling, not the plan for next month. Exams, competitions, auditions, a conservatory application — if the answer is “we will see how it goes”, the ceiling is low and you will be teacher-hunting again in three years.
Who hears my child play besides you?
Playing for a room is its own skill and it has to be practised. My students perform in our recitals, and sit exams and competitions where the assessment comes from outside the studio.
What do you do about technique in the first year?
Hand position, wrist, the weight of the arm. These are either built in the first months or paid for later in stiffness and injuries. A teacher who has no answer here is teaching songs, not playing.

What southwest families ask me
We do not own a piano yet. Should we buy one before we start?
Start first, buy second. After a few lessons I can tell you what this particular child needs and what to avoid, and you will spend your money once instead of twice. If you want to read up in the meantime, my recommended instruments and books page is where I put what I actually use.
My child is three. Is that too early?
No — if the lesson is built for a three-year-old: short, physical, mostly ear and rhythm, with the keyboard as the reward rather than the desk. What is too early is a thirty-minute reading lesson. See lessons for young children.
Can two children in the family be taught back to back?
Yes, and southwest families do it constantly — one lesson after the other, one trip. Tell me both ages when you write and I will put them in neighbouring slots.
My child has been learning for two years somewhere else and seems stuck.
That is the most common reason people come to me, and it is almost never the child. Usually the hand was never set up, or the reading was skipped in favour of memorising, or nothing difficult was ever asked. Bring whatever they are playing now and let me hear it; the first lesson will tell us which of the three it is.
I am an adult and I would just like to play one piece.
A perfectly good reason to start, and adults do it often — a wedding, a parent’s birthday, something that has been in their head for twenty years. Learn a piano piece →
Where the studio is
9862 West Tompkins Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89147 — Spring Valley, just east of the 215 and south of Flamingo, which puts it inside a short run from Enterprise, Mountain’s Edge, Rhodes Ranch and Southern Highlands. Neighbouring pages: Spring Valley, Summerlin and Henderson. Lessons are by appointment between 9 am and 9 pm, so after-school and evening times are usually open.
The lesson that decides it
You do not need to read any more pages to make this decision, and you should not make it from a page anyway. Book one lesson. Watch what happens in those thirty minutes — whether anyone corrects the hand, whether your child is asked to do something slightly beyond them, whether they leave knowing exactly what to practise and why. That is what you are buying for the next ten years, and half an hour on this side of town is enough to see it.
