Students come from Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills, Inspirada and the rest of Henderson to my private studio on West Tompkins Avenue in Spring Valley — straight across the 215. I’m Dr. Maria “Masha” Pisarenko, a concert pianist and university piano professor, and I teach children from age three, teens, adults and seniors. For Henderson families who prefer not to drive on a school night, the same lessons are available online.
The question every Henderson parent asks: is it worth the drive when there is a teacher closer? A teacher who sits on competition juries, prepares students for ABRSM Distinctions and teaches at the college level gives a child a foundation that does not need to be rebuilt later. That is what the drive buys.
What the first six months should sound like
Most Henderson parents who write to me are not asking for a prodigy. They want to know that the money and the weekday evenings are producing something real. So here is the honest shape of a first half-year at this studio, and what you should be able to hear from the kitchen without knowing a note of music yourself.
A child who comes once a week and touches the piano for ten or fifteen minutes on most other days will, by the end of six months, read simple music off the page rather than from memory, keep a steady beat without me counting, use the fingers of both hands independently, and play two or three short pieces well enough to perform them. If that is not happening, something in the teaching needs to change — and I would rather say so in month three than in year two.
Month one
Sitting, hand shape, the geography of the keyboard, the first small pieces by ear and by eye. The goal is that the instrument stops feeling foreign.
Months two and three
Reading in both hands, a steady pulse, and real repertoire rather than endless exercises. This is where a weak start shows, and where it is still cheap to fix.
Months four to six
Two or three finished pieces, the first scales, and a first appearance in a studio recital. Playing in front of people is part of the learning, not a reward for it.
What you can check at home
Ask your child to play the same piece twice at the same speed. If the tempo holds and the hands stay relaxed, the foundation underneath is sound.

Four questions worth asking any piano teacher in Henderson
There are good teachers all over Henderson, and there are also people who took eight years of lessons themselves and now charge by the hour. The difference is almost invisible on a website and completely obvious two years in. These four questions sort it out quickly, and you are welcome to ask me the same ones.
Where did you train, and with whom?
Not a diploma for its own sake. A teacher who was taught properly knows what a healthy hand looks like at seven, and what to do when it is not healthy.
Where do your students play?
A studio that performs has recitals on the calendar, exam entries and festival results. A studio that never performs has nothing to show you.
How far can you take my child?
Ask it plainly. Many teachers are honest about stopping at an intermediate level. I teach at the university level, so the answer here is as far as the student wants to go.
What happens when we fall behind?
Illness, school exams, a family trip. Ask what the plan is. Mine is an online lesson at the same standard, so the week is not simply lost.
How Henderson students fit lessons in
Lessons run from 9 am to 9 pm by appointment — later evening slots mean the drive happens after the worst of the traffic. Many families combine lessons at the studio with online lessons on busy weeks, at the same standard. Every student, beginners included, performs in our recitals.
What Henderson parents ask me first
Is the drive from Green Valley really worth it?
It is roughly twenty minutes across the 215 outside rush hour, and the later appointment times exist for exactly that reason. Families from Anthem and Seven Hills have been making the same drive for years. The ones who stop usually stop because a student has finished, not because of the road.
My child is three. Is that too young?
No, but it is a different lesson: short, physical, and mostly about listening and rhythm. Reading comes later. I teach from age three, and after a first lesson I will tell you honestly whether your child is ready now or would do better in six months.
We have a digital piano, not an acoustic one. Is that a problem?
Not at the beginning, if it has 88 weighted keys and a sustain pedal. What matters more is that it is always available, in a quiet room, and not pushed into a corner where nobody wants to sit.
Do adults really start from nothing here?
Every week. Adults understand faster than children and their hands move slower, so the repertoire is chosen accordingly. Nobody is handed a children’s method book.
Can we take lessons only during the school year?
That is common and it is fine. I will say plainly that students who keep playing through the summer come back in September where they left off, and the others spend about six weeks catching up to themselves.
Every corner of Henderson: Green Valley, Anthem, Inspirada, Lake Las Vegas and Boulder City
The studio is open to families from all over Henderson: Green Valley and Green Valley Ranch, Anthem and Sun City Anthem, Seven Hills, MacDonald Ranch and MacDonald Highlands, Inspirada, Cadence, Whitney Ranch, Mission Hills, the Black Mountain neighbourhoods and Lake Las Vegas. From Henderson the drive is on the 215, so a weekly lesson fits between school pickup and dinner. When the drive is too long for every week, you can mix lessons in the studio with lessons by Zoom, with the same teacher and at the same price.
Boulder City families can start online and come to the studio when they are in town. Whoever is learning, a child of three, a teenager preparing for an ABRSM or LVMTA exam, a mom or dad coming back to the piano, or a grandparent in Sun City Anthem starting for the first time, the lesson is planned for that person. See adult lessons and lessons for seniors.
Green Valley, Anthem, Seven Hills — the practical part
The studio is at 9862 West Tompkins Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89147, in Spring Valley, straight over the 215 from Henderson. If you are comparing neighbourhoods, these pages cover the rest of the valley: Spring Valley · Summerlin · Southwest Las Vegas · Northwest Las Vegas.
If you are still deciding, write to me and say the age of the student and what you are hoping for. I answer personally, and if I am not the right teacher for your family I will say that too.
