Piano lessons for Northwest Las Vegas, Centennial Hills and North Las

Students from the northwest valley — Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, Providence, Aliante, Lone Mountain and North Las Vegas — study with me at my private studio on West Tompkins Avenue in Spring Valley, or online. I am Dr. Maria “Masha” Pisarenko, a concert pianist and university piano professor, and I teach children from age three, teens, adults and seniors.

The northwest is the part of the valley where the search for a piano teacher usually ends in a compromise. There are teachers close to home, and there is the drive down the 215 to a studio that can take a child the whole way — through reading, technique, exams and a stage. Many families start out looking for the first and come to me when they realise what they actually wanted was the second.

What the drive buys, honestly

I will not pretend the distance is nothing. From Centennial Hills or Aliante the studio is a run down the 215, and once a week for years that is a real piece of a parent’s evening. So the only fair question is what the trip buys that a lesson around the corner does not.

It buys a teacher who has prepared students to ABRSM Distinctions, who teaches piano at the college level, and who has been teaching in this city since 2006. A beginner taught by that person learns a hand position, a reading habit and a way of listening that does not have to be unpicked and rebuilt three years later. The rebuilding is the expensive part, and it is the part no family ever budgets for.

And it does not have to be every week. Northwest families often keep one lesson at the studio and take the next one online on a school night — same teacher, same plan, no drive. In the weeks before an exam or a recital we usually meet in person more often; the rest of the year the hybrid holds up well.

Northwest and North Las Vegas: Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, Providence, Aliante, Craig Ranch

This is for families in Centennial Hills, Skye Canyon, Providence, Lone Mountain, Tule Springs, Iron Mountain Ranch, the Kyle Canyon area and Painted Desert, and in North Las Vegas: Aliante, Craig Ranch, Eldorado and Valley Vista. From the north the drive is the longest in the valley, down the 215 or US 95, which is exactly why the studio-plus-online rhythm above exists. Whether it is a five-year-old, a teenager getting ready for ABRSM or a college audition, or a retiree starting at last, see kids, teens, adults and seniors.

How to Choose a Piano Teacher in Northwest Las Vegas

Four questions to ask any teacher in the northwest valley

Ask them of me, and ask them of everyone else you are considering. The answers tell you far more than a brochure does.

What will my child be able to do in a year?

A teacher who has taken students through a syllabus answers in specifics — pieces, keys, reading level, a recital date. A vague answer usually means there is no plan behind the lessons, only the lessons.

Who hears my child play besides you?

Playing for a room is a separate skill from playing at home. My students perform in our recitals and, when they want it, in exams and competitions where someone outside the studio does the assessing.

What are your own qualifications, and where did you study?

Mine are listed above and every one of them is checkable. Ask for the degree, the institution, and the names of the teachers behind the teacher.

What happens when my child wants to quit?

Every child says it at least once. The answer should be a method, not a pep talk — which repertoire to switch to, what to loosen, what to hold firm on. That one moment decides whether the years already spent survive.

What northwest families ask me

Is an online lesson really the same?

For most of what a lesson actually does — hearing, correcting, assigning, sitting through a passage played twenty times until it is right — yes. What it cannot do is reach over and move a small child’s hand. So with children under about seven I ask for the first months in person, and after that the hybrid works. For teens and adults online is not a concession at all; some of my steadiest students have never had a weekly drive. The online lessons page explains how it runs.

My child is three. Is that too early?

No — if the lesson is built for a three-year-old: short, physical, mostly ear and rhythm, with the keyboard as the reward rather than the desk. What is too early is a thirty-minute reading lesson. See lessons for young children.

We tried a teacher nearer home and it did not stick.

Tell me what happened; that history is useful, not embarrassing. It is usually one of three things — the repertoire was never the child’s own, the hand was never set up and playing became physically uncomfortable, or nobody but the teacher ever heard them play. All three are fixable, and the fix is not starting again from zero.

Can you prepare him for an exam or a college audition?

Yes, and it is work with a calendar: the pieces chosen for him, scales and sight-reading built in from the first month, and a mock performance in front of other people well before the date. Exam preparation →

I only want to learn one piece.

That is a perfectly good reason to start, and adults do it often — a wedding, a parent’s birthday, something that has been in their head for twenty years. Learn a piano piece →

Where the studio is

The studio is at 9862 West Tompkins Avenue, Las Vegas, NV 89147 — in Spring Valley, west of the 215 and south of Flamingo. Students from Summerlin and Spring Valley are the closest neighbours, and northwest families often pair the trip with something else on this side of town. Lessons are by appointment between 9 am and 9 pm, so late afternoons and evenings are usually open.

Come once before you decide

Here is the thing nobody says out loud when you start looking. The northwest fills up with young families faster than it fills up with piano teachers, so the good local slots go early and you end up choosing between the teacher who is near and the teacher who is right. Do not settle that on a map. Come once, let me hear your child play, and ask me the four questions above to my face. If the drive is wrong for your family I will say so myself and show you how the online half works — and if it is right, you will have the same teacher for the next ten years instead of the next ten months.
