Six to eight is the age at which a child can truly begin — not only sit at the instrument, but read, count and hear what they are doing. They can follow a line of music left to right, hold a steady pulse, and carry a correction from one week to the next. It is also the age at which a poor first year does the most lasting damage, because a child this small decides very early, and very quietly, whether music is something they are good at.

What a six- to eight-year-old can actually do

1. Read before they can explain. Children this age take in notation the way they take in spelling — by meeting it constantly inside something they want to play. Drilling the names of notes away from the keyboard is slower and far less durable than meeting the same note twenty times in a piece they like.
2. Concentrate for about twenty minutes. A lesson built as one long block loses a six-year-old somewhere around minute twelve. A lesson that moves — the piece, then rhythm on the lid, then listening, then back to the piece — keeps the same child present for the full half hour.
3. Copy with the whole body. Hand shape, wrist, posture and even breathing are learned at this age by imitation, not by instruction. That is why what a child copies in the first year matters so much, and why habits formed here can take years to unpick later.
4. Hold on to one correction for a week. One. Give a six-year-old three corrections in a lesson and none of the three survives until Tuesday. Choosing which single thing to fix is most of the skill in teaching this age.

The questions parents ask me first

Will I have to fight them to practise?

Not if the practice is short, named and finished. A child of six needs a specific task — this line, five times, slowly — and a clear end to it. “Go and practise” is what causes most of the household arguments about piano, because the child cannot tell when they are allowed to stop.

Do we need a real piano?

Not to begin. You need something with weighted keys that holds its tuning and lives somewhere the family actually sits. An instrument in the living room gets played; the same instrument in a cold spare room does not. What to look for, at several budgets, is on the recommended books and instruments page.

How soon will they play something I recognise?

Usually within the first months, though “recognisable” at this stage means short. What takes longer, and matters a great deal more, is playing that short piece with a steady pulse and a sound the child chose on purpose.

What if they want to stop?

Most children want to stop at some point, and very often at a predictable one — the moment the easy early progress slows down. Tell me while it is happening rather than after they have quit. It is nearly always a repertoire problem or a practice-routine problem, and both can be fixed.

How to choose a piano teacher for a young child

Parents usually ask about times and rates first. These four questions tell you much more about whether a studio will suit a six-year-old:

1. What will my child do in the first ten minutes of a lesson? If the honest answer is scales and finger exercises, keep looking — for this age that is a recipe for a child who concludes piano is homework.
2. How many children this age are you teaching right now? Teaching a six-year-old and teaching a sixteen-year-old are genuinely different jobs, and being excellent at one does not make a teacher good at the other.
3. What will you ask me to do at home? At this age a teacher who gives the parent no role at all is leaving about a third of the work undone. You should know exactly what your part is.
4. What happens if my child falls behind the book? The right answer is that the book moves, not the child. A method book is a tool, not a timetable.

I will also tell you honestly if I think your child would be better off starting in a year — some six-year-olds are, and beginning too early is one of the most common reasons a child decides they are “not musical”. When a child of six or seven is taught well, the piano stops being somewhere they are taken and becomes something they go and do on their own, without being asked. Reaching that point is the whole aim of the first year here, and very nearly everything in these lessons is arranged to bring it closer.
